A contemporary approach to Cypriot medieval glazed ceramics
The artist’s aim is to discover the creative space, both technically and contextually, between the existing examples of the medieval Cypriot glazed ceramics. Working within these «time gaps» will allow for the possibility to express a contemporary aesthetic.
Although the form and design of pots and plates had always been primarily practical and useful, at the same time functioned as a medium of expressing artistic ideas, beliefs and the social status of their time. Following the medieval methods and techniques resulting from her research, the artist experiments within the guidelines of the medieval Cypriot ceramics paradigm, searching for the production of a contemporary work of art both in context and form.
However, it is often surprising that very little or even nothing needs to be changed in the creative process of ‘contemporizing’ these ‘medieval’ works. When the preconception of historical distance and particularity is overlooked, the modern character of these works can be revealed.
Gestural painting and a high level of abstraction evident in the decorative patterns and figures of the medieval ceramic plates and pots relates to the work of modern artists such as Picasso, Miro, etc. The freedom in expression, the boldness in experimentation as well as some examples that can be characterized as surrealist gradually blur a distinct line between the modern and the obsolete.

Μια σύγχρονη προσέγγιση στην Κυπριακή μεσαιωνική εμφυαλωμένη κεραμική
Στόχος του καλλιτέχνη είναι να ανακαλύψει τον δημιουργικό χώρο, τόσο τεχνικά όσο και εννοιολογικά, ανάμεσα στα υπάρχοντα παραδείγματα της μεσαιωνικής Κυπριακής εμφυαλωμένης κεραμικής. Η εργασία μέσα σε αυτά τα «κενά χρόνου» θα επιτρέψει τη δυνατότητα έκφρασης μιας σύγχρονης αισθητικής.
Ενώ ο ρόλος των αγγείων υπήρξε πρωτίστως πρακτικός και χρηστικός, ταυτόχρονα λειτουργούσαν και ως μέσο έκφρασης καλλιτεχνικών ιδεών, πεποιθήσεων καθώς και αποτύπωσης της κοινωνικής ζωής της εποχής τους. Ακολουθώντας τις μεθόδους και τις τεχνικές της εποχής όπως προέκυψαν από την έρευνά της, πειραματίζεται μέσα στις κατευθυντήριες γραμμές του παραδείγματος της μεσαιωνικής εμφυαλωμένης κεραμικής ψάχνοντας για την παραγωγή ενός σύγχρονου έργου τέχνης, τόσο σε περιεχόμενο όσο και σε μορφή.
Ωστόσο, συχνά προκαλεί έκπληξη το γεγονός ότι πολύ λίγα ή ακόμα και τίποτα δεν χρειάζεται να αλλάξει στη προσπάθεια ‘εκσυγχρονισμού’ των ‘μεσαιωνικών’ αυτών έργων. Μέσα από την υπέρβαση της ιστορικής προκατάληψης και ιδιαιτερότητας μπορεί να αποκαλυφθεί ο σύγχρονος χαρακτήρας αυτών των έργων.
Η χειρονομιακή ζωγραφική και το υψηλό επίπεδο αφαίρεσης στα διακοσμητικά μοτίβα και τις μορφές των μεσαιωνικών κεραμικών πιάτων και αγγείων μπορούν να συσχετιστούν με το έργο σύγχρονων καλλιτεχνών όπως ο Πικάσο, ο Μίρο κα. Η ελευθερία στην έκφραση, ο τολμηρός πειραματισμός καθώς και μερικά παραδείγματα που μπορούν να χαρακτηριστούν υπερρεαλιστικά, φαίνεται να αμφισβητούν τα σαφή όρια ανάμεσα στο σύγχρονο και το απαρχαιωμένο.

An event organized by Polina Koroleva in which people brought and exchanged plants on a rainy April Saturday. An open ceramic workshop was functioning from 10:00 until 17:00 for designing and making a pot for your plant, for both adults and children, with beautiful results. Relaxed atmosphere, meeting new people, interesting conversations and premium quality Chinese tea prepare by the ‘Satori Tea’ group.
