experience the arts & crafts

Diatehnon Arts & Culture specializes in the arts, crafts and design.  With reference to the Cypriot heritage, ancient and medieval and within a wider cultural context our aim is to create contemporary works of art, objects for home decor, as well as useful objects such as plates, bowls, jars, mugs, cups etc by understanding and using the technical and aesthetic knowledge of the past. At the same time we promote this knowledge by organizing workshops, educational presentations and activities in the specialized fields of ceramics, painting, icon painting and instrument making. We are located in a revitalized part of the Old Municipal Market in the centre of Limassol, Cyprus, designed into a multi-functional space for hosting our workshops, events and activities since May 2015.

who we are

Diatehnon arts & culture is based in the Mediterranean city of Limassol, Cyprus. Our aim is to collect, study and develop methods and techniques, as well as theoretical knowledge in the fields of arts, crafts and design and promote them to the community and the wider public, both in Cyprus and abroad. For this we have been creative and active in collaboration with artists from Cyprus and abroad since 2014.

The word diatehnon which in Greek means “through the arts” and  “via the arts” defines our philosophy and approach. Similar to the English prefix “inter” which means “between” or “among” (ie inter – disciplinary), the Greek prefix “dia” (ie dia – logue) denotes a movement between the various fields of the arts. Within this interdisciplinary movement between the arts, crafts and design, our vision is to promote aesthetic values and skills of craftsmanship, often forgotten or marginalized within the contemporary lifestyle, through which people can improve their well being and awaken their creative impulse and need of personal expression.

Our research field spreads from instrument making, focusing on the construction of string instruments, from the medieval lute to the modern guitar, the the dogmatic and technique of icon painting and portraiture as it has developed from antiquity, proto -Christian, through to the Byzantine art and modernity until today and the ceramic techniques and methods from Bronze age, the medieval glazed ceramics to the modern ceramic art & design paradigms. Our aim is to collect, understand, evaluate and reinterpret these paradigms  in order to creatively and functionally apply them within the contemporary context of our times.

We have hosted internships in ceramics and icon painting under the Erasmus Intern programme. We are open for collaborations and partnerships related to the culrutral heritage and the arts.
